WARNING: SPOILERS for Episode 5.03

Braavos

Sunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones starts with Arya Stark and her journey to become “Noone”. At the end of the previous episode we saw her gain entry to the House of the Black and White. Now we see inside the mysterious guild of assassins where they seem to reduce each form of Godly worship to it’s final form of Death. Before she can learn their arts she must sweep floors and tend to the cleaning. She is told “All men must serve” as she questions the menial tasks. After a small altercation with another learner Arya is told to get rid of her “Ary” possessions and that includes her sword, Needle. Unable to toss it in the water, she hides it among the stones thus showing that she will never truly forget her roots.

King’s Landing

Wedding bells usually don’t end with smiles in Westeros. But, in this instance the lucky newlyweds make it past the party. And what a post party it is for young King Tommen as he and Margaery consummate the marriage without wasting any time. This new seduction seems to be part of the new Queen’s plot to manipulate the boy king and wrestle control of him away from his mother Cersei. Margaery even goes so far as to make fun of the old Queen to her face in a bold move to show off in front of friends. Cersei quickly makes some moves of her own as the current High Septon is assaulted by a group of “Sparrows” whilst enjoying a bit of perverted playtime at a Littlefinger brothel. The holy man asks Cersei for help and she decides it is time to meet the “High Sparrow” on his home turf. Amid the impoverished and hungry Cersei forms a new alliance with this influential religious leader in an effort to outflank the plotting Margaery. Afterwards a quick visit to Qyburn’s workshop also shows us that he seems to be working on something unnatural.

The Wall

Lord Commander Jon Snow meets with Stannis and Davos to discuss the supply problem Castle Black is having as hosts of Stannis’ army. The Baratheon King announces that he will march south to attack the Bolton’s at Winterfell and gives Jon some advice on how to handle his new duties. Later that night Jon assign’s some undesirable work to some of his brothers and gives a prestigious title to old rival Alliser Thorne. He also attempts to split up Ser Alliser and his lacky Janos Slynt by assigning Lord Slynt to another of the Wall’s crippled castles. Janos refuses the order and hurls a few insults as well. Jon see his chance to get rid of this annoyance and removes Janos Slynt’s head in the process. Stannis nods his approval and so do we fans.

Volantis

Tyrion and Varys get out of their travel house and venture into the city as Tyrion needs to stretch his legs. And by that we mean find a brothel. On the way they cross paths with a Red Priestess speaking to a group of followers about the Dragon Queen in Meereen. Tyrion learns a bit about where he is headed and then runs off to find a woman. In the brothel Tyrion is reluctant to finish his business with one of the prostitutes and scampers off to the privy. There he is met by Jorah Mormont and promptly kidnapped by the man from Bear Island. Jorah tells him that they are on their way to the Queen...but which one?

In the North

Ramsey has been very busy skinning northern lords that were unwilling to bend to Bolton rule. His father, Roose, explains to him that his methods must change as they no longer have the backing of the mighty, but very dead, Tywin Lannister. Roose explains that he has made a marriage pact with Littlefinger for Ramsey and Sansa Stark. Theon Greyjoy, or rather Reek, hears the conversation but what can he do in his pathetic state? Sansa is presented to the Bolton family and she puts on a gracious show. She is then shown to her room by a nice and comforting old woman who welcomes back the daughter of her former Lord with the classic book line “The North Remembers”. Could that little old lady be suggesting something?

Brienne and Pod have a nice scene together that was wonderfully acted in which Brienne discusses the painful story that ended with her becoming loyal to Renly Baratheon. She agrees to properly train Pod as a knight and then vows to one day kill the man she holds responsible for killing Renly, his brother Stannis Baratheon.
